Fellr Ginger Beer

· · Comments

As is generally the case when trying new alcoholic ginger beers, expectations were low. They dropped even further when reading on the can that this ginger beer was "brewed". That said, happy to say that despite being brewed, which is generally a death knell for good ginger beer, Fellr's Ginger Beer was surprisingly drinkable.

As is always the case with brewed ginger beer, it had a unique background flavour more a fault than a plus but it wasn't so unpleasant as to make it undrinkable unlike most brewed ginger beers. That is likely down to it being more of a seltzer than a beer base meaning it is more neutral in flavour being rice or similar based rather than malt. Additional benefits of the seltzer base, low sugar, vegan, low cal & gluten free.

The can branding is really well done. They've done an amazing job of letting the silver of the base can shine through the gold at the top of the design. The gold end on top is the icing on the branding. A great example of can branding done really well. It is interesting that the can is properly printed (by Visy or Orora), meaning they likely had to order at least 50,000. A solid gamble on a brewed ginger beer but then again the fact that they only have to pay the beer excise as opposed to the RTD excise makes it a solid contender on the shelf price wise so probably a good gamble given the solid branding even if it is "brewed".

Is it the best alcoholic ginger beer available? No. Is it the best brewed alcoholic ginger beer available? Yes. Probably wouldn't buy it again given other options but it if was the only option or on offer at an event, wouldn't say no.

Mandatory Label Information: Odd that they didn't go with the standard drinks icon on the back for readability, instead opting for text. Also not the best idea having "alcoholic" in small text at the bottom on the front, would be better placed between the logo & "Ginger Beer" for future proofing against ABAC complaints.

Ingredients: Rice? Water? Ginger Juice?
