Why You Should Always Drink Beer From A Glass

· · Comments

Beer should ALWAYS be enjoyed from a glass. Even when you're out and about where you can't take glass you should at least be pouring your beer into a cup or removing the top of the can using a Draft Top.

Ever tried pinching your nose whilst eating or drinking? You can't taste what you can't smell and drinking beer from the can is the same. The small opening doesn't allow you to smell the beer properly and take in the full aroma. At an absolute minimum you should always be drinking from a cup or can with the top removed so you are at least experiencing the full aroma & flavour of the beer the beer the way the brewer intended.

Whilst smell is the most important aspect of why you should always drink beer from a glass, there are a number of other reasons:

  • Beer glassed are generally tapered inwards from the middle to the top of the glass which concentrates the aroma and head of the beer.

  • Beer glasses are generally made of clear glass to allow the colour, clarity and carbonation of the beer to be properly assessed.

  • Beer glasses generally include nucleation points at the bottom of the glass which are designed to produce a steady release of Co2 bubbles maintaining the head. These are often a cross-hatch etch or rough sanded circle at the base of the glass. Some breweries go a little further, etching their logo in the base of the glass to act as the nucleation point.

  • metallic taste can be apparent when drinking directly from the can. Cans these days have a polymer inner coating so it is unlikely to be from the can itself, it is more likely the proximity of your nose to the can, as you smell the aluminum can and sip the beer, the sensations can be intermingled causing it to seem as though the taste is metallic.

Have any questions in regards to the above? Have we missed something? Let us know if the comments.
