El Dorado Hops

The first hop of Neomexicanus heritage propagated for commercial sale was El Dorado by CLS Farms in 2010. El Dorado is named for the lost city of gold in reference to the deep, gold lupulin on the inside of the hop cones. Originally grown on a single acre in Washington, following strong interest from brewers at a stall at the Great American Beer Festival, CLS Farms increased El Dorado's acreage to 27 acres in 2011.

Originally grown for it's high alpha acid content, El Dorado more appealed to brewers originally for its unique pear & watermelon aroma. The aroma it is known for has changed based on brewer feedback and through adjusted harvest windows now resulting in a stronger tropical and stone fruit aromas. Time of harvest has a strong effect on aroma, early picked El Dorado has strong citrus aroma, whilst middle pick features watermelon and pear aroma. Late (peak) pick features tropical aromas of pineapple, mango, stone fruit, candy lemon and cherry.

El Dorado is now grown by 23 licenced growers in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, & Michigan and is the 7th most popular hop variety in the US. It's unique amongst proprietary hop varieties in that growers are free to market and sell it independent of centralised control unlike most proprietary hops. El Dorado is a high yield hop variety with high alpha acids and total oil content although unlike many of it's more modern counterparts it is not easy to grow.
