Neomexicanus Hops
One of the more exciting developments in hops of recent times has been the commercialisation of Neomexicanus hops, a genetically distinct sub species of hops found growing wild in the mountainous regions of New Mexico in the United States.
The first hop of Neomexicanus heritage released commercially was El Dorado in 2010. Whilst the first 100% Neomexicanus heritage hops, Medusa & Zappa, were released in the mid 2010s, a lack of supply meant most of the crop was snapped up by Sierra Nevada, who to be fair, helped find the hops in the wild with Todd Bates and the owners of CLS Farms. Unfortunately neomexicanus yields per acre are currently only about half of that of a common variety like Centennial.
The next major commercial release of a Neomexicanus hop came in the form of Sabro in 2018. Since then there has been something of a wave of new Neomexicanus varieties released hopefully with more to come.
